New England Patriots Quarterback: Cam Newton, Nick Foles Among Trade Options To Replace Tom Brady
The New England Patriots aren’t expected to replace Tom Brady with a big splash in free agency. The AFC East champions could give backup Jarrett Stidham a chance to win the starting job for the 2020 NFL season. There are also starting-caliber quarterbacks that are available via trade.
Here’s a look at some of the trade options for the Patriots.
Nick Foles
The Jacksonville Jaguars reportedly want to deal Foles and make Gardner Minshew their starter. The Chicago Bears are a potential landing spot for the Super Bowl LII MVP, though he could be a fit for the Patriots. Foles has made 58 career starts and has a 4-2 playoff record. The two years on Foles’ contract after 2020 are not guaranteed.
Cam Newton
The Carolina Panthers have effectively moved on from Newton, reportedly signing Teddy Bridgewater to a three-year contract. The team has given Newton permission to seek a trade, and he’s probably one of the Patriots’ best options. The cost for Newton wouldn't be much, considering he has one year left on his contract and has suffered a season-ending injury in two straight seasons.
Jacoby Brissett
Brissett became one of the league’s most expensive backups Monday when the Indianapolis Colts agreed to a deal with Philip Rivers. Indianapolis gave Brissett a two-year, $30 million contract shortly after Andrew Luck retired in August, and the quarterback went 7-8 in 2019. New England drafted Brissett in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He made two starts during Brady’s Deflategate suspension.
Andy Dalton
Like Newton, Dalton has one year left on his contract and is being pushed out by a younger quarterback. The Cincinnati Bengals are expected to select Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow with the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Dalton has been linked to New England for weeks as a possible replacement for Brady. He’s a nine-year starter with four playoff starts.
