A New Haven police officer is facing two charges related to a fatal car crash in Las Vegas that resulted in the death of another cop.

The incident happened on Friday around 4 a.m. when a 2020 Rolls-Royce was seen speeding down a street, according to witnesses.

The vehicle eventually crashed into another car before hitting utility poles and a fire hydrant. The Rolls-Royce also flipped over several times during the collision.

Officer Joshua Castellano, who was one of the passengers, was ejected from the vehicle. He received life-saving measures at the scene and was later transported to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

Castellano was hired by the New Haven Police Department in July of 2014 and was a seven-year veteran.

Castellano was in the car with three other New Haven cops, including officer Robert Ferraro, who was driving under the influence.

Following the accident, Ferraro, 34, showed signs of impairment when Las Vegas Police arrived on the scene.

He was arrested and faces charges of driving under the influence and reckless driving. The driver of another car and other passengers in Ferraro’s vehicle suffered minor injuries from the crash.

On Saturday, New Haven Police Chief Renee Dominguez revealed officers are in mourning following Castellano’s death. “The grief and the pain that the men and women of the police department are going through is that of a brother,” Dominguez said.

New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker also issued a statement reacting to the officer’s death.

“My thoughts and condolences are with the family of Officer Castellano as well as his friends and colleagues at the New Haven Police Department,” Elicker said.

“Officer Castellano served our community for seven years. We’re thankful for Officer Castellano’s service; he will be greatly missed.”

Ferraro has been put on on administrative leave with pay and is expected to appear in a Las Vegas court on Saturday.
