New Orleans Shooting: 2 Dead, Multiple Wounded In Lower 9th Ward
Multiple people were shot and at least two people were killed following gunfire in the 5100 block of St. Claude Avenue, Lower 9th Ward Tuesday night, New Orleans police reported.
The incident was reported to have taken place around 8 p.m. EST in the area, where police said the victim, who died on the spot, was in the back of a red car that was pulled sideways into a gasoline station.
Initial reports showed possibly five victims suffering from gunshot wounds, police stated. One victim died on the scene from the injuries, while the other succumbed to the wounds in a hospital. Authorities have not released further details about the case yet. A police scanner stated some of the wounded were transported to at least two local hospitals.
According to Nola.com, a newspaper published in New Orleans, a man looking onto the crime scene from the neutral ground claimed he lives about 6 blocks away and was inside his residence when he reportedly heard several shots being fired.
"It sounded like they had a war going on," he said. "It's crazy this is crazy. This is foolish, what are they killing each other for? This is just foolish for our people to be killing each other. For what?"
Another witness, who also said he lived a few blocks away from the crime scene, described hearing "hundreds" of gunshots ring out around 8:30 p.m. EST.
"It sounded like we were in Iraq or something. This happens too much. It needs to stop. What they get out of it, I don't know," he said.
