  • A trademark filing by Nintendo could mark big 35th anniversary plans next year for "The Legend of Zelda"
  • The series has always been bankable for Nintendo but has seen a resurgence in recent years with "Breath of the Wild" and "Link's Awakening"
  • The trademark filing includes items like toys and clothing in addition to extra game releases

When “The Legend of Zelda” celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2021, Nintendo might be planning something big to commemorate it.

Like “Super Mario Bros.,” “The Legend of Zelda” has been one of the publisher’s most successful and popular brands, enduring and lasting in several forms over several consoles through the years. Because of that staying power, ScreenRant notes that it was more than likely that Nintendo was always going to make a big deal about this milestone.

The series has seen a resurgence in recent years despite it always playing a significant part in Nintendo’s back catalog. The 2017 release "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" is widely considered to be one of the best entries in the series. The recently released "Link's Awakening" was also critically acclaimed.

As two of the more bankable titles on the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo clearly has a big audience waiting for more “The Legend of Zelda” titles. Even the infamous Gigaleaks from a few weeks back featured early 3D renditions of Link for a "Legend of Zelda" title that had yet to be released then.

Twitter user NaZyrus07 has uncovered a trademark listing from Nintendo that seems to indicate that the company has a lot of plans for “The Legend of Zelda” to celebrate the franchise's 35th anniversary.

Nintendo itself has not announced anything to date related to “The Legend of Zelda” for 2021. Still, the listing suggests that fans will get plenty of new video games, merchandise, and media based on “The Legend of Zelda.”

The trademark filing includes items like toys and clothing in addition to extra game releases. One possibility is that Nintendo will create a collection of remasters for the Nintendo Switch.

The trademark listing looks very similar to a filing from last year that seemed to relate to the 35th anniversary of the “Super Mario Bros.” franchise. Given that Nintendo has been sparse in its Mario festivities likely due to the pandemic, several reports insist that a series of Mario remasters are headed for the Nintendo Switch.

In March, rumors suggested that a collection releasing later in the year will include “Super Mario 64," "Super Mario Sunshine,” and "Super Mario Galaxy.” Older “ Super Mario games are also expected to be added to the Switch Online library, rounding out the celebrations for the iconic series.

If the rest of 2020 does see a collection of “Super Mario” remasters arrive on the Nintendo Switch, then it can only lead to anticipation that something similar will happen for “The Legend of Zelda.” The action-adventure franchise has a number of games that have never been remastered or remade, making them ideal for bringing across to the latest console.
