Many New York homes are infamous for their lack of space. However, a woman in the city got more than she asked for when she discovered an entire condo tucked away behind the bathroom mirror in her rented apartment.
Samantha Hartsoe documented the discovery in four parts and shared them on TikTok. Her videos have become a viral hit since.
Hartsoe, who works for a non-profit in the city, said in the first video after coming back from a hiking trip, she noticed her bathroom had an unusually cool breeze blowing inside.
"It was weird, because I don’t have a vent that I know of in there that blows cold air," Hartsoe said in the post.
In the clip, which has been viewed over 8.5 million times on TikTok, she shows a gaping hole opening behind her bathroom mirror. To her utter surprise, the hole opens up to a dark room.
"I need more answers," Hartsoe says in the video. "I have to go in and figure out what is on the other side of my bathroom."
Hartsoe, wearing a face mask and gloves, and carrying a hammer for protection, enters the mystery extra space found in her three-bedroom apartment. Upon venturing inside, she finds a whole new apartment lurking behind the mirror opening.
"Wow, this is a whole other apartment," Hartsoe says in the video.
In one of the videos, the secret room can be seen littered with garbage bags and used water bottles, which she called were the "signs of life."
The purpose of the apartment wasn’t clear, but Hartsoe said it was inhabitable due to lack of facilities. “I’m not sure if it was being renovated or if it is empty. It’s really old, and nobody’s been in there a while. The shower-bathroom area is all piping—there’s no actual bathtub or toilet. The floor, and what I think would be the kitchen, was ripped up,” Hartsoe said in the video.
Hartsoe’s video was also posted on Twitter on Thursday where it garnered 4 million views.
In an interview with Curbed, Hartshoe said after she entered inside the vacant unit, coming out became pretty hard.
"I have to find my way out of here," she remembered thinking when inside. "I have to go back through that hole, which is pretty much impossible, or I have to find the exit of this place, which means I have to, at this point, explore it all."
She exited the apartment through the main door, which opened to a hallway somewhere else in the same apartment complex, to come back into her own condo.
In the comment section, an internet user likened the discovery to a script from the films "Candyman" and "Parasite."
"This was insane," said another, while a third labeled the videos "better than the best true crime podcast you've ever streamed."
