New York Knicks NBA Future Dampened With Sale Rumors
The New York Knicks are not expected to make the NBA playoffs, a reason why head coach David Fizdale has opted to give younger players larger chunks of playing time. Also, critics believe that the Knicks will strike in the summer as they join the wild race for top free agents available.
At the top of the list is Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, two names expected to be hounded by offers by the end of this NBA season. However, another angle has been thrown into the mix – will James Dolan still be the ballclub’s owner?
Rumors of an impending New York Knicks sale came about after Bill Simmons of the Ringer claimed that multiple people have informed him that Dolan was courting offers for the Knicks. When word of such reached Dolan, he immediately branded it as nothing more than fake news. He said that the report is nothing and that there have been no discussions and no plans to have discussions.
However, Dolan did not rule out the possibility of selling the Knicks, ESPN reported. But based on how the conversation went, it looks like it will take a lot to convince Dolan to sell the franchise. As of this writing, no name has been mentioned as a potential buyer.
Selling the Knicks at this point would make sense if one is to gauge it by the ballclub’s performance. The last time New York made a credible run in the playoffs was back during the 2012-13 NBA season. They advanced to the conference semifinals, defeating the Boston Celtics (4-2). In the semis, they fell to the Indiana Pacer 4-2. They have since failed to advance past the NBA regular season.
A potential scenario for the Knicks is for Dolan to wait and see what lies ahead. It could radiate until the summer to see who they are able to snag from the free agent market. There is also the NBA Rookie Draft where they could snag the top overall pick. A player that they could go after is Zion Williamson.
Right now, the Knicks have two max slots for free agency available, something that resulted from that Kristaps Porzingis trade to the Dallas Mavericks. It all boils down to the new look of the New York Knicks come the 2019-2020 NBA season.
