New York Police Officer Faces Discipline After Friend Accidentally Shoots Himself Dead With Officer's Gun
A New York Police Department rookie officer has been suspended without pay after his friend took his gun early Sunday morning and accidentally shot himself dead.
Martinson Afariyeboah was off-duty and at his 21-year-old friend's apartment, as the two were playing video games. The friend, Frederick Afoakwah, held Afariyeboah's gun, which was on a coffee table, and inadvertently shot himself in the neck.
"There was blood all over the rug and the sofa," Ransford Afoakwah, Frederick Afoakwah's father, told the New York Post. "He wasn’t speaking."
Frederick Afoakwah later died at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx.
"It’s pretty tragic, and pretty stupid," a police source told the Post.
A source also told the Post that Afariyeboah's story about the incident was "not consistent." The case is being investigated by the Internal Affairs Bureau.
Afariyeboah had been with the NYPD for about a year, according to the New York Daily News.
The NYPD has not issued a press release about the incident on its official website.
