The New York Times announced that current managing editor Jill Abramson will be the newspaper's next executive editor. Bill Keller, the executive editor for the last eight years, resigned from his post and will write a weekly column for a new Sunday opinion section set to launch June 26.

Dean Baquet, the Times' assistant managing editor and Washington bureau chief, will assume the role of managing editor. The newsroom changes will take effect September 6.

Abramson will become the first woman in the newspaper's history to hold the top newsroom position.

Without question, Jill is the best person to succeed Bill in the role of executive editor, Arthur Sulzberger, the paper's publisher and chairman of The New York Times Co., said in a statement.
