Hank Steinbrenner was in line to run the Yankees after his father’s passing and for a brief time when his father was ill both Hank and Hal ran the team. Hal morphed into the front man over time. Hank was much more like his dad, shoot from the hip, glib Hal is reserved in comment

Hank owned the Yankees along with his brother, Hal Steinbrenner, who has been the public face of the franchise for the last decade. The brothers officially inherited the team from their father, George Steinbrenner, when he died in 2010.
Hal took control of baseball operations for the Yankees in November 2008. Hank stepped back from the public eye in 2009, but he remained involved in decision-making.
“Hal knows the business, but it’s Hank who knows baseball,” a staffer of Hank said in “Inside the Empire: The True Power Behind the New York Yankees,” a book about the Yankees’ 2018 season. “He always kept a hand in after George died. Hal does nothing without going to him first.”
