Newborn Abandoned In Bushes Suffers Broken Leg, Survives Hours In Cold Weather
A newborn baby in India has miraculously survived after she was left outside in cold weather for hours. The baby girl was found abandoned in the bushes with a fractured leg.
Police said the baby spent several hours in the cold before officers rescued her on the night of Dec. 20, the Times of India reported Monday. The temperate had dropped below 9 degrees Celsius at the time.
The infant was found wrapped in a piece of cloth and was in critical condition. She was rescued from the Knowledge Park neighborhood in the Indian city of Greater Noida, near New Delhi.
"On December 20, we found the infant wrapped only in a piece of cloth. Her condition was quite critical. We brought her to the police station," said Vinod Kumar Singh, the police officer who found the child.
The officer took the baby to his house and his wife, Jyoti, breastfed the hungry and cold infant before she was taken to a hospital.
"My husband came up to me and asked if I could feed her," Jyoti told the outlet. "She was in so much pain from the fractured leg."
"The only thing she needed then was mother's milk," she continued. "Although scared, I decided to breastfeed her. I calmed her down and she fell asleep. She was with me for a few hours before being taken to the hospital. I will see her again on Monday. I heard she was stable."
The infant was initially diagnosed with jaundice. Her left leg had a fracture, which police suspect was caused when she was thrown in the bushes.
"Doctors are monitoring the baby. Her saturation, pulse and all other vitals are normal. Her left leg has been plastered and she will be kept under observation for a few more days," explained a nurse.
Calling it a miracle, a doctor said, "She survived the cold weather. Thankfully, she is breathing fine."
There are no details available on her parents or who might have abandoned the child in the bushes, according to Times Now.
"I can't understand how could someone do something like this with a child? I felt miserable watching the baby suffer and felt like crying," said Jyoti. "I would like to send out a message that if someone has a problem caring for their children, they should take them to a safe place like an orphanage or an NGO where they could be raised. Such acts are reprehensible."
