Authorities in Alaska are seeking more information about a newborn baby who was abandoned near a row of mailboxes on New Year’s Eve.

Alaska Department of Public Safety troopers revealed the newborn was found at 2 p.m. in Fairbanks. The baby was discovered, swaddled in blankets in single-digit temperatures with a wind chill of 12 degrees below zero.

The abandoned infant was discovered by Alaska resident Roxy Lane, who shared a video on Facebook of the newborn and the note from the mother.

“Please help me!!! I was born today on December 31, 2021 [at] 6 a.m. I was born 12 weeks premature. My mom was 28 weeks when she had me. My parents and grandparents don’t have food or money to raise me,” the note read.

“They NEVER wanted to do this to me. My mom is so sad to do this. Please take me and find me a LOVING FAMILY. My parents are begging whoever finds me. My name is Teshawn.”

Along with the video, Lane also shared a message reflecting on the incident. “Today I found an abondaned [sic] newborn in a cardboard [box] at the row of mailboxes by my house,” she wrote in the post.

“I’ve been processing my feelings all day and running through all the different scenarios and reasons, with my bf and family, as to why something like this could have happened.”

Lane also suggested the parents of the baby may have been unaware of Alaska’s Safe Haven Law. Under the law, parents can safely give up a newborn at a local fire or police station, hospital, or church.

According to a statement by state troopers, “The child was transported by EMS to a local hospital and was found to be in good health.” Authorities are asking anyone with information about the abandoned baby to contact investigators.
