A search is underway for a woman who dumped her newborn baby in a 15-feet deep snake-infested septic tank in Malindi, Kenya, soon after giving birth.

The unidentified woman dumped the baby in the septic tank and immediately fled the scene. A passer-by heard the baby crying and immediately peeped into the tank only to find that the newborn was surrounded by two snakes. The passer-by immediately alerted the residents living nearby. One of them went into the tank using a ladder, wrapped the baby in a cloth, and rescued the newborn. The man then handed over the crying baby to a group of women. Luckily, the baby was not bitten by the snakes, the Star reported.

The rescue operation was caught on camera. In the video, a woman can be heard saying, "We will have to first go and wash her with warm water before he is taken to hospital." The newborn was then taken to a nearby hospital by the residents and the doctors confirmed the baby was in a good condition.

A police case has been filed and a search was underway for the mother. The snakes were reportedly killed by the residents after the newborn was rescued.

Meanwhile, speaking to the Star, Held Esliy, an activist from Malindi, condemned the incident saying, "Police are looking for the mother of the child. As a mother I condemn the act, a child is an angel how does one do such an inhuman act to an innocent soul?"

An investigation into the case was ongoing.

The incident comes a year after a baby boy was rescued after he was abandoned under a truck in Kenya. Passers-by heard the baby crying and found him lying under the truck with his umbilical cord still attached. They carefully cut the umbilical cord and wrapped him in a warm cloth. Police arrived at the scene and rushed the baby to a nearby hospital in a critical condition. Luckily, following treatment, the baby’s condition improved.
