A newborn baby with his umbilical cord still attached was found dumped in the bushes near a village in India over the weekend.

Local residents went near the bushes after hearing the cries of a baby Saturday. They found wild animals and dogs nibbling the infant boy. The child was allegedly abandoned by his mother. The incident occurred in Raipur Khas village in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The villagers managed to save the newborn from the animals and took him to a nearby home. They gave him milk and removed his umbilical cord. After cleaning the baby, he was rushed to a government hospital, Daily Pioneer reported. The child was given a tetanus injection.

He was later shifted to another hospital. After receiving treatment for his injuries, the child is currently under observation at the facility.

Police are trying to determine who abandoned the baby and also locate the mother. Local nonprofits are also assisting the officers.

A childless woman has reportedly expressed willingness to adopt the newborn. It remains unclear if the baby will be given to her. Several other women from the same village also came forward to adopt the child, local language website News Track reported, a Google translation showed.

In a similar incident last week, a prematurely newborn baby was found dumped in a pile of garbage in a town in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The baby, with his umbilical cord still attached, was spotted by local residents returning from a mosque. The baby was immediately rushed to a nearby health care center and the umbilical cord was removed.

He was moved to another hospital later. Doctors at the facility said the baby had been born prematurely and weighed just 4.5 pounds. He was kept under observation at the neonatal intensive care unit.
