A newborn baby's body was found inside a garbage bag in an open-air dump in Mexico.

The infant's corpse was found Monday and an investigation into the incident was in progress, local police said, Mexico News Daily reported. Police were also searching for the baby's mother.

Authorities arrived at the scene after they were informed about the abandoned corpse by an anonymous caller. Police said the body was found in the dump near a market in the city of Oaxaca.

Other details such as who abandoned the baby and when it happened remain unclear. It is not known if the baby was alive when he or she was dumped.

The incident comes just days after police found a newborn’s decomposing body on the shores of the Atoyac River in the city. In this case also the body was found inside a garbage bag. After an autopsy, forensic experts said the 2-week-old baby was beaten, asphyxiated and then abandoned.

In another case of child abandonment, a newborn baby was found stuffed inside three gunny sacks and left to die in the cold. Passersby heard the baby's cries and found her inside the sacks on the side of the road in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The child was reportedly left there by her parents. Police arrived at the scene and took the baby to a nearby hospital for treatment.

"I was on my way to work when I spotted a crowd along the road. When I reached there, I saw people trying to rescue a newborn from abandoned sacks. I took out my jacket, comforted her and later alerted police," Rachit Kumar, who was the first person to locate the baby, told the local daily The Times of India.

"Most people gathered there were making videos. The sacks were roughly handled by the person trying to take the baby out of it and as a result, her head hit the ground," he added.
