A newborn was found in the trash in Darwin Street, Kaluga, Russia on Tuesday.

The baby was alive when it was found by an unidentified man who was passing near a compartment for construction waste in Darwin Street, according to the press service of the regional Ministry of Internal Affairs, Russian news outlet Interfax reported. The passerby noticed a bundle moving in the trash that made him stop and investigate further. When he opened the bundle of cloth, he found a baby inside. The man wrapped the baby back in clothes and called the security services.

The authorities arrived at the scene and took the baby to the Kaluga perinatal center. The newborn was examined at the medical facility, which determined that she was a girl. She weighed 2,900 gram, and was 50 centimeter (1.6 foot) in height. The doctors also confirmed the baby was born less than three hours before being discovered in the trash and that she did not sustain any “visible injuries and frostbite marks.”

The site where the baby was found was treated as a crime scene by authorities, with forensic experts and police dogs examining it as part of investigation. Investigators announced a monetary reward for anyone who can provide any information regarding the suspect(s) in the case. The exact amount of the reward is not known.

On Dec. 8, passersby found the body of a newborn boy in a snowdrift two kilometers (1.2 miles) from the city of Aksay, Rostov region, Russia.

“The body of a newborn baby, male, with no visible injuries wrapped in cloth and the plastic bag was found,” the regional Investigative Committee of Russia (ICR) said, Crime Russia reported.

Two days after the discovery, the mother of the baby was located by the police and charged with the murder of a newborn child. She faced up to five years in prison.
