Newly Married Man, Nephew Suffer Injuries After Wedding Present 'Gifted' By Jilted Lover Explodes
A newly married man in India and his 3-year-old nephew suffered severe burns after a wedding gift exploded while they were unpacking it. The police are investigating a jilted lover in connection with the case, reports said.
Latish Gavit, from Mindhabari village in the western Indian state of Gujarat, got married last week and was opening his wedding presents Tuesday when one of them exploded. Gavit's wrist was severed, and he was left with severe burn injuries on his upper body and damage to both his eyes. Gavit's 3-year-old nephew, identified as Jiyas, was also injured in the incident, as reported by India Today.
Gavit got married to a woman identified only by her first name Salma on May 12. When Gavit and Jiyas were unpacking the wedding gifts in presence of other family members at their residence, they found a rechargeable toy among them. When Gavit attempted to charge the toy, it exploded, police said.
The family rushed the victims to a nearby hospital for treatment of the burn injuries.
According to Gavit's family, the toy was gifted to the couple by Raju Dhansukh Patel, identified as the ex-boyfriend of Salma's sister, India TV reported.
Patel was reportedly in a live-in relationship with Salma's elder sister before they broke up some time ago. The family has filed a complaint and the police have started an investigation into the incident.
The investigators now suspect that Patel gifted the explosive to the newly wedded couple to exact revenge on the bride's sister, who had stopped responding to him.
In another incident reported in 2021, a jilted lover in India died while his attempt to burn a woman alive backfired after she held him tight. The man, identified as 30-year-old Vijay Khambe from the city of Mumbai, had reportedly been harassing the 28-year-old unidentified woman ever since she rejected his marriage proposal after being close to him for three years. Khambe poured gasoline on the woman and set her ablaze while she was alone at home. The woman, however, suddenly rushed toward Khambe and held him tight, causing him to die of burn injuries.
