KEY POINTS

  • Kyle Shanahan fancied Matthew Stafford before the Rams acquired the player
  • The Niners' interest in Stafford raises questions on Jimmy Garoppolo's future
  • Trey Lance could get starting role if Garoppolo struggles this coming season

The San Francisco 49ers are trying to improve their roster, and one role that needs addressing is the quarterback position.

Jimmy Garoppolo and rookie Trey Lance are the current play-callers for the Niners, but the future of the former has been often discussed.

Garoppolo has proven to be an efficient player but only when he is healthy. The 29-year-old has a history of health struggles. This is one reason why most speculated that he could be traded.

But with a hefty $25 million contract, the chances of other NFL teams taking in the two-time Super Bowl champion are likely to be nominal.

Rather than indulge in a trade now, most are likely to wait until his current pact runs out.

However, the revelation of Shanahan should raise speculations. Admitting that they made a push to try and trade for Matthew Stafford will rock the boat.

There was no mention of what assets or which player would be involved although the name of Garoppolo comes to mind.

“That was frustrating. I was in Cabo. I was studying it all. … I remember looking through it because everybody was telling me it was a possibility. Stafford’s the man. I studied him hard coming out of college, and you always play against him, so you know how good he is,” part of what Shanahan said to the Flying Coach podcast.

Stafford ended up getting traded to the Los Angeles Rams in a big deal. The Detroit Lions got Jared Goff as part of the deal.

Stafford is a seasoned veteran and is a one-time Pro Bowler (2015). Despite his age, the 33-year-old has been able to maintain some degree of success.

He is coming off a 2020 campaign, in which he completed 64.2 percent of his passes for 4,084 yards and 26 touchdowns.

The 49ers are expected to start the NFL season with Jimmy Garoppolo as their starting quarterback.

However, it would not come as a surprise if Trey Lance at some point gets the starting nod.

49ers beat reporter Matt Maiocco feels that should Garoppolo struggle at some point, it would pave the way for Lance to take over the starting quarterback chores.

“It’s just a matter of when they make that decision when to go with Trey Lance over Jimmy Garoppolo. It could be at the start of the season although that’s kind of unlikely. It could be at some point during the season if Garoppolo struggles or the team starts losing some games. It could be at the end of the season,” Maiocco stated when he appeared on the Sports For All PH podcast hosted by Filipino journalists Vincent Juico and Brian Yalung last July 2.
