NFL News: Cam Newton Still Figuring Out Options For Next Season
KEY POINTS
- Cam Newton claims he is not short on offers this offseason
- The Carolina Panthers want Newton back for next season
- Newton could end up in a backup role if he will sign again with the Panthers
Cam Newton has yet to officially sign up for the coming NFL season, but the three-time Pro Bowler claimed that he has several options on the table.
The 2015 NFL MVP wants to make sure he joins the team where he could be maximized.
"I have teams that are interested in signing me," Newton said to Adam Schefter of ESPN. "I am waiting on the best fit as it pertains to winning a championship and getting a fair chance to play."
Newton did not mention which teams have expressed interest in him. However, the speculation is that one of those NFL teams is the Carolina Panthers.
The Panthers was where Newton grew to prominence.
The 32-year-old quarterback was Carolina’s top pick in 2011, a place where he spent nine seasons.
Aside from winning the MVP award in 2015, it was the same year Carolina made it to the Super Bowl.
Newton’s run with the Panthers came to an end in 2020 when the 32-year-old was released.
He joined the New England Patriots on a one-year deal, but his stint was hardly memorable.
The 2015 NFL Offensive Player of the Year was cut by the Pats in August of last year.
He found himself reuniting with the Panthers on a one-year deal worth $10 million to replace an injured Sam Darnold.
Newton’s return hardly helped the cause of the Panthers with Carolina losing all the five games where the ex-NFL MVP started.
Regardless, the Panthers reportedly want him back according to team general manager Scott Fitterer.
"It's not just us saying, 'Hey, Cam, come on back,'" Fitterer shared. "He's got to want to come back. He's got to like the role, the situation. It's really just a fit for both of us.”
While it makes sense, Newton’s role this time around may change as Darnold is likely to be in 100% condition at the start of the new season.
For now, it remains to be seen if Newton would be fine taking a backseat.
