KEY POINTS

  • Dak Prescott's long-term contract is far from getting settled with the Dallas Cowboys
  • Prescott is more likely to play under the franchise tag this NFL season for Dallas
  • Prescott may get four-year contract wish from Cowboys

Dak Prescott's contract extension talks with the Dallas Cowboys have not been moving forward. Unless anything comes up in the next 24 hours, the 26-year-old quarterback is likely to play the 2020 NFL season under the league's franchise tag.

July 15 will be the last day for Prescott and the Cowboys to strike a long-term deal before the franchise tag comes into play. According to Jane Slater of the NFL Network, Dallas has already dangled its final offer to Prescott.

The deal is reportedly worth between $33 to $35 million annually, with $100 million of it guaranteed. If Prescott opts to pass up the offer, he will be placed under the franchise tag and earn $31.4 million for the 2020 NFL season.

Prescott remains the only player of the Cowboys' big three who has yet to get a new contract. Ezekiel Elliott and Amari Cooper have already gotten fresh leases.

Elliott agreed to a six-year $90 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid running back in the league. Cooper also came to terms with Dallas, agreeing to a five-year deal worth $100 million.

The situation between Prescott and the Cowboys has been running on for months. Previously, it was a disagreement on the wages and the number of years, and it appears that remains the same. Dallas had already tended a five-year offer that is believed to be near what one Carson Wentz got with the Philadelphia Eagles. Wentz got a four-year deal worth $128 million.

But the Cowboys' latest offer has been hit for having a percentage of money being too low for a five-year term, NBC ProFootballTalk reported. Among the things that can be done is to increase the guarantee and cut the number of years to four. Prescott prefers a four-year contract.

Prescott has performed well since joining the Cowboys in 2016. Since being selected by Dallas with the fourth overall pick, the player out of Mississippi State has yet to miss a single regular-season game.

Throughout that spell, Prescott has had more than 15,000 yards, 97 passing touchdowns and 36 interceptions. He has also completed 66% of his passing attempts.
