NFL Rumors: Colts May Lose More Than Season Against Jaguars; Rivers Hints Retirement
KEY POINTS
- Philip Rivers could retire after the current NFL season
- Rivers' contract with Colts is soon expiring
- The Colts face tough odds making it to the NFL playoffs
Philip Rivers of the Indianapolis Colts is expected to start this weekend when they face the Jacksonville Jaguars.
At 39-years-old, he remains a force to reckon with. However, Rivers is also at the point where decisions have to be made. One of them is retirement.
Regardless, Rivers has had a solid season. He threw for 4,005 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while completing 68.3 percent of his passes this season.
He fits well in the quarterback role for the Colts, especially with things not turning out so well with Jacoby Brissett. But the reality of it all is that Indianapolis will need to find a new franchise quarterback soon.
“It did cross my mind. If things don’t go the way you want this weekend, it could be... I guess it’s healthy to have that thought because we’re not guaranteed anything going forward,” Rivers said to Stephen Holder of the Athletic.
Retirement is possible, but not in the eyes of Colts head coach Frank Reich. He sees Rivers good for multiple years and feels this NFL season will not be the Alabama native’s last.
“I can just tell you I really believe it’s Philip’s intent to play multiple years... I’m very optimistic it will be a multiple-year thing,” Reich said in another report from the Athletic in May.
As of this writing, there is no telling if Rivers will indeed call it a career. Until now, he has shown no inclinations that this will be his last hurrah.
A better picture of that could come out depending on the result of their game against the Jaguars.
However, it does not get easier from there. They also need to pray that he changes his mind when they play the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans, The Indy Star reported.
Rivers signed a one-year deal with the Colts, and the partnership has so far proven effective. But the eight-time Pro Bowler also said that he will only continue playing for as long as he is enjoying it.
He has no plans to follow Tom Brady and play into his 40s. The 2013 NFL Comeback Player of the Year never wants to feel like he's just milking a couple of extra years out of his career.
