NFL Rumors: Cowboys Coordinator Almost Hired By Panthers To Be Next Head Coach
The Dallas Cowboys came very close to needing a new offensive coordinator. Kellen Moore finished as the runner-up in the Carolina Panthers' head coaching search, NFL Network reports.
The Panthers seriously considered hiring Moore before making Frank Reich their next head coach. Moore has helped the Cowboys' offense become one of the NFL's top units over the last few years, making him head coaching candidate for several openings.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Moore fit the Panthers' initial profile of what they hoped to be their head coach. Carolina was looking to hire a young offensive mind that could grow with the team. When the Panthers had to make a final decision, they ultimately went with Reich because he has a track record of success as a head coach.
If Carolina went with Moore over Reich, the Panthers would've had the youngest coach in the entire league. Moore is only 34 years old and only five years removed from retirement as a player.
The Cowboys made Moore their quarterbacks coach for the 2018 season. Moore was elevated to offensive coordinator the following season, during which Dallas had the league's No. 1 offense. Two years later, the Cowboys led the league in both total yards and points. Dallas was fourth in scoring offense for the 2022 season.
It might not be long before Moore gets a head coaching job. The Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos all interviewed Moore for their head coaching vacancies last year. Four teams still need a head coach for the 2023 season.
Even if Moore returns, the Cowboys' coaching staff will feature several changes next season. Dallas has parted ways with six coaches since being eliminated by the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional playoffs. Assistant head coach Rob Davis, running back coach Skip Peete, offensive line coach Joe Philbin and assistant defensive line coach Leon Lett were among the coaches who weren't re-signed.
Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is a candidate for a few vacancies around the league. There seems to be a good chance that he will get a second opportunity to be a head coach.
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is likely safe for at least one more season.
