KEY POINTS

  • The financial impact of the coronavirus may cause teams to adjust their roster
  • A projected loss of $70-100 million for each NFL team if games push through without fans
  • The Dallas Cowboys are speculated to make some cuts from their team to adjust for this loss

It has been one of the more unique seasons in the NFL due to the threat of the coronavirus. The financial impact has been immense and may affect teams such as the Dallas Cowboys in their roster.

While the Cowboys are praised in having one of the best offseasons in the league, there are several concerns the coronavirus has brought up. No matter how popular the franchise, the virus has found a way to affect everyone in this global pandemic.

Given that one of the main solutions for events to continue is by pushing through without a live audience, the lack of ticket sales will be tremendous. Per Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, he shared that there will be major repercussions for the league if this happens.

“Games played with no fans would represent a loss of anywhere between $70-100 million in gate receipts, concessions and parking for each NFL teams, on top of any loss of associated sponsorship dollars,” Jones said.

This will send a domino effect throughout the franchises across the NFL.

“If the cap nosedives to, say, $140 million in 2021, that sort of hit would send shockwaves through the NFL for years to come,” Jones continued.

With this development, teams may have to look into their roster and adjust their game plan moving forward. For the Cowboys, their successful offseason haul may entail certain sacrifices in their already stacked roster. Per Cowboys Wire, players such as Tyrone Crawford are in danger of getting cut.

The defensive end has been one of the team’s leaders as he’s been a staple contributor in the Cowboy’s defense since 2012. But the team would have to make adjustments given that Crawford has the team’s seventh-highest cap hit in 2020 with $9.1 million.

To add to these, Crawford is also coming off hip surgery after missing the majority of the 2019 season with an injury. The Cowboys have players like Gerald McCoy, Neville Gallimore and Trysten Hill to cover the team’s defensive duties.

The threat of the coronavirus lingers and it will be interesting to see how teams move forward in this rapidly evolving time.
