KEY POINTS

  • Dolphins keeping Fitzpatrick
  • Fitzpatrick to mentor new quarterbacks in the fold
  • Miami yet to decide on whether to pick Tagovailoa or Herbert

The Miami Dolphins are expected to select a young quarterback at the 2020 NFL Draft though it is unlikely he will be the starting QB for the team this coming NFL season. It remains that the team still needs a veteran in two and it appears that guy will be Ryan Fitzpatrick.

According to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins plan to keep Fitzpatrick moving forward. This is the direction that Miami plans to go, regardless of what happens at the NFL Draft or whoever may be available in free agency. Summing it up, the Dolphins are taking no chances and want to make sure that they have a proven and reliable quarterback in the fray.

For the record, Fitzpatrick did not do bad last NFL season. In fact, coach Brian Flores was all praises for the 37-year-old quarterback. His leadership was lauded, something that helped the team a year ago. This comes despite the fact that there are some interesting quarterbacks that could be within reach. Among them is a guy named Tom Brady. Despite his age, multiple teams have been linked to the six-time Super Bowl champion. Among the teams in the lead are the Las Vegas Raiders and his former team, the New England Patriots.

As to who they will select at the 2020 NFL Draft, it remains a tossup. Tagovailoa was originally believed to be their guy but it appears talks did not do well. A reason for this is likely because of the American-Samoan's hip injury. Though he seems to have recovered from it, the Dolphins are a bit cautious when it comes to taking in someone who has had a history with a serious injury. Much of this was covered in a previous post.

The second option is Justin Herbert. Unfortunately, the 21-year-old sent of mixed signals at the NFL Combine recently. It seems he is not entirely confident about what he brings to a team, something that may have just turned teams off. Regardless, some team will take a chance on him. The only question is will the Dolphins pick him with the fifth selection over Tagavaioa. Better yet, will any NFL team risk taking him in and try to build that lack of self-confidence.

If the Dolphins end up getting Herbert, Fitzpatrick will be tasked to whip Tagovailoa or Herbert to shape. Being around for some time now, the Ivy League Player of the Year knows that his responsibilities are growing - one that includes molding his potential replacement prep for the NFL wars.
