The New York Giants could soon hire their next head coach with Matt Rhule set to interview with the team Tuesday. It’s no secret that the Baylor coach is the organization’s top choice to replace Pat Shurmur, who was fired after two disappointing seasons in the Big Apple.

There’s no guarantee that Rhule will choose to leave college football. His contract with Baylor runs through 2027. He turned down the opportunity to interview with the Cleveland Browns and reportedly passed on the chance to be the New York Jets head coach a year ago.

If the Giants don’t land Rhule, they might consider a recently fired head coach.

According to The New York’s Post’s Paul Schwartz, Jason Garrett is a fallback option for New York. When it was clear during the regular season that the Dallas Cowboys wouldn’t bring back Garrett for the 2020 NFL season, there were rumors that Garrett might be up for the Giants’ job.

Dallas announced Sunday that the organization was moving on from Garrett. The Cowboys have replaced him with former Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy, who was interviewed by the Giants last week.

Garrett would likely be a very unpopular hire in New York. The much-maligned head coach had an 85-67 record in 9.5 years with the Cowboys, making three playoff appearances and no trips to the NFC Championship Game.

Garrett was the Giants’ backup quarterback from 2000-2003.

Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Don Martindale could be a serious candidate for the Giants if Rhule turns them down. New York will interview New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who is considered the favorite to be the next Browns head coach.

Rhule has already interviewed to be the Carolina Panthers head coach. He went 11-3 with Baylor in 2019, losing to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day.

The Giants have gone 12-36 in the last three seasons.
