KEY POINTS

  • Garoppolo's injury places him in a precarious position to lose his starting role
  • The Niners may permanently put Lance as their primary play-caller on the field
  • Garoppolo’s time in San Francisco may be winding down with his recurring injuries

Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers is old enough to know that all eyes are on him this NFL season.

At the top of the list is for him to stay healthy, so he can keep his starting job with the Niners.

Unfortunately, the 29-year-old suffered yet another injury in their Week 4 loss to the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday, October 3.

He ended up sitting out the remainder of that game after suffering a calf injury.

Now, Garoppolo will have to wait for what scans will show about his latest injury. An MRI is set to be done on Monday, October to determine how serious the injury is.

The MRI results of Garoppolo’s calf injury are important. It will more or less determine how long Kyle Shanahan will have to rely on Trey Lance to call the shot for the 49ers.

This early, Garoppolo is hoping that it would be only for a couple of weeks, Marcus Thompson of The Athletic reported.

According to Shanahan, Garoppolo was trying to get it going during halftime. The Niners eventually opted to go with Lance with the two-time Super Bowl champion watching helplessly on the sidelines.

“He got hurt sometime in the first half. He said he got stepped on,” Shanahan said via NFL.com. “He played for a while with it. We didn’t think it was that bad at the time… About a minute before halftime he was trying to get it going, but he just couldn’t push off it.”

Regardless of how long he will be out, Garoppolo may find himself in an even bigger hole.

A lot of that depends on how well Lance can hold it together for the 49ers, who are now 2-2 and at the bottom of the NFC West.

If the 21-year-old turns things around for San Francisco, Garoppolo may have a tough time reclaiming the starting quarterback role.
