The Green Bay Packers fired Mike McCarthy as their head coach Sunday, but he might not be out of a job for long. The Cleveland Browns have reportedly already begun to consider the possibility of hiring the one-time Super Bowl champion.

According to FanSided’s Matt Verderame, the Browns are “working on exploring” whether they will offer McCarthy their head coaching position. The Browns fired Hue Jackson as their head coach on Oct. 29. Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams has been the interim head coach for the last month.

Few available coaches, if any, will have a resume that can compare to what McCarthy accomplished in Green Bay. McCarthy compiled a 125-77-2 record with the Packers from 2006 through Week 13 of this season, winning Super Bowl XLV in the 2010 season. Green Bay only missed the postseason in 2006, 2008 and 2017 under McCarthy, though the team is on the verge of being eliminated from contention this year.

McCarthy has received plenty of criticism for only winning one title with Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback. The relationship between McCarthy and Rodgers was one of the reasons Green Bay made the change Sunday.

Browns’ general manager John Dorsey worked in Green Bay’s front office during McCarthy’s first seven seasons as the Packers’ head coach.

Cleveland’s head coaching job is more desirable than it has been in recent years, despite the team’s lack of success. With a 4-7-1 record, the Browns already have as many victories as they had from 2015-2017.

Baker Mayfield has shown why he was chosen with the No.1 overall pick in the draft, posting a triple-digit passer rating four times. The four other quarterbacks taken in last year’s first round have three combined games with a passer rating of at least 100 as a starter this season.

McCarthy should be a candidate for several head coaching vacancies this offseason.
