KEY POINTS

  • Everson Griffen has been a staple for the Minnesota Vikings' defense
  • The Seattle Seahawks are one of the favorites in signing Everson Griffen
  • There is still a possibility that Everson Griffen resigns with the Minnesota Vikings

The offseason in the NFL continues to have high-caliber talent remaining in the free-agent market. Veteran Everson Griffen is still unsigned but teams such as the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks have been within the radar.

Throughout Griffen's career, he’s made a name for himself as a defensive end not to be messed with. The 32-year-old has spent his entire stint in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings and is a four-time Pro-Bowler. The raw power and strength Griffen shows on the field has garnered him the nickname The Freak as he’s tallied a career total of 355 tackles and 74.5 sacks.

The defensive staple for the Vikings opted out for his contract this year to test the free-agent market. One of the teams that have been the constant favorites to sign Griffen is the Seattle Seahawks. In multiple reports, Griffen is said to be a good fit for the Seahawks considering all the talk of Jadeveon Clowney leaving the team.

The presence of Griffen as a Seahawk could provide Seattle the defensive presence they need once Clowney signs with a different squad. The Seahawks finished 11-5 record last year and having an addition of Griffen’s caliber will keep their squad in contention.

Despite the anticipation of Griffen signing with the Seahawks, the Vikings are still not out of the question. A possible return for Griffen to Minnesota brings a lot to the table with the addition of 15 new players from the draft. The veteran presence and leadership of Griffen could complement the young players of the team.

The 2019 season had the Vikings finish with a 10-6 record, good enough for second place in the NFC North division. While they lost in the Divisional Playoffs round against the San Francisco 49ers, the Vikings are still a team that could contend. Having Griffen stay could be an additional boost for the team who has benefited from his tremendous defense.

The season remains in question with the whole global pandemic that has affected everyone. While there have been no finalized plans yet on how the league will resume, teams are still rampantly preparing for the season. It will be interesting to see where veterans like Griffen will end up in the coming year.
