KEY POINTS

  • Deebo Samuel's status will likely be clearer once the 2022 NFL Draft gets underway
  • Samuel would make sense for the Jets and Lions but not the Packers
  • More NFL teams may express interest in Samuel in the coming weeks

The San Francisco 49ers may have a huge decision to make soon with wide receiver Deebo Samuel wanting out. Three NFL teams have been linked to a potential trade for the All-Pro receiver, reports say.

The teams that have expressed interest in trading for the 2021 Pro Bowler include the Detroit Lions, New York Jets and Green Bay Packers, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported.

The same teams being leaked to ESPN and NFL Network could hint that the one behind the rumor is the same person, Pro Football Talk suggested. In such a situation, the information usually comes from the player’s agent, according to the outlet, but this is unconfirmed.

There is also the possibility that the team may be the one creating the buzz, which the outlet said could suggest that the 49ers are considering trading Samuel.

Of the three teams, the Lions could make sense. Given that he is effective with the ball in his hands, Samuel could be a good fit for the system of coach Dan Campbell.

But a team where Samuel could make more sense would be the Jets. New York needs to surround quarterback Zach Wilson with the right personnel, and Samuel could be the perfect addition to fill in that need.

The Packers, on the other hand, appear to be a long shot. Although the 49ers and the Packers are not in the same division, they are rivals who cross paths in the postseason from time to time. That has happened twice in the last three years.

More teams could enter the picture soon with the 2022 NFL Draft nearing.

Set for Thursday, the fate of Samuel may be clearer once the San Francisco 49ers select their first-round pick.

Samuel made his trade demand public recently but did not offer a specific reason, ESPN reported. However, reports have suggested that the reason behind this may be tied to his contract with the 49ers.

Negotiations between the team and Samuel's camp appeared to have bogged down, with the wide receiver putting a halt to contract talks, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
