NFL Rumors: New England Patriots Unlikely To Sign Cam Newton Due To Josh McDaniels
KEY POINTS
- Cam Newton is one of the biggest NFL free agents remaining in the market
- It has been reported that the New England Patriots will unlikely sign Cam Newton
- One of the rumored reasons why the New England Patriots won't sign Cam Newton is because of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels
With the offseason still brewing hot for teams, the speculated Cam Newton signing to the New England Patriots has been deemed unlikely. Reports have surfaced that this was influenced heavily on offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
The recent NFL draft saw the New England Patriots skipping the chance on selecting a quarterback. It was believed that the Patriots would select a quarterback for their future given Tom Brady left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It would be the first time in two decades that New England will play without their superstar player.
While it has been rumored that the Patriots will select a signal-caller, the draft proved otherwise. The highest selection New England had was safety Kyle Dugger out of the Lenior-Rhyne football program in the second round.
These have added to the talk that Newton is a perfect fit for the Patriots with their direction for a new quarterback.
While the idea of the 2011 number one overall pick leading the charge of New England has teased fans across the league, this isn’t deemed likely. Despite the Patriots being the betting favorites at -190, experts have slammed the notion that Newton will go to New England.
Last March, Patriots beat writer Jeff Howe tweeted that the Patriots have no interest in signing Cam Newton. He reiterated that point by quote tweeting his previous statement and sharing that nothing has changed since then.
This was heavily backed down by recent reports saying that McDaniels wasn’t too excited about Newton. Per Joseph Person of The Athletic, the Patriots aren’t aggressively going for the former league MVP.
“Plus, New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels wasn’t necessarily high on Newton when he was talking to the Panthers about their head coaching vacancy, according to a source,” Person said by way Sports Illustrated.
It would be interesting to see what direction the Patriots will go to in the coming season. As the Newton talks start to tone down, New England’s quarterback of the future is looking to be set up for 23-year-old Jarrett Stidham.
