KEY POINTS

  • The 49ers' options are down to Mac Jones and Trevor Lance
  • Dustin Fields is no longer an option for San Francisco at the NFL Draft
  • Jones looms as a priority for the Niners

The San Francisco 49ers are in for some sleepless nights as they try to figure out who to select at the 2021 NFL Draft.

They have three options, namely Mac Jones, Trey Lance and Justin Fields. But from the three, only Fields is reportedly out of their preferred picks.

The 49ers worked their way to the No. 3 spot from the 12th spot, dealing away their first-round pick in each of the 2021, 2022, and 2023 drafts to the Miami Dolphins.

So far, general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan have done their due diligence on Jones and Lance.

Fields of Ohio State has surprisingly been out of the picture despite a good run with the Buckeyes. That included leading the team to the national championship game against Clemson.

The 49ers were pretty busy taking a look at Jones last March 30, ironically the same day when Lance showed off his talent.

But of the two, it appears San Francisco took it up a notch and even got involved in designing the script workout of the North Dakota State product.

So while there are three names available for Lynch and Shanahan to choose from, it may all boil down to Jones and Lance.

The 22-year-old threw for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns against four interceptions and guided the Crimson Tide to the national championship in January. He is also ranked high at 2021 NFL Draft prospects.

As for Lance, he appeared in only one game in his sophomore season and registered 149 yards to go along with his first career interception for North Dakota State. He is expected to be selected at No. 1 although this subject to change.

Picking ahead of the Niners are the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New York Jets.

Some NFL mock drafts see Trevor Lawrence getting selected by the Jaguars followed by Zach Wilson by the Jets.

Hence, it may all boil down to either Jones or Lance, especially with the latest word that Fields is no longer an option for San Francisco.
