NFL Rumors: NY Giants Breaking It Gently To Retirement-Bound Eli Manning
KEY POINTS
- Giants unlikely to bring back Eli Manning next NFL season
- The New York Giants are expected to transition to Daniel Jones
- Giants team owner Steve Tisch is throwing his full support to new head coach Joe Judge
The New York Giants are rebuilding and along with that comes that transition of players. One player most unlikely to return is 39-year-old Eli Manning. Though he helped the team reach two Super Bowls, it remains that the Giants need to lean on another quarterback at the helm.
According to TMZ Sports, New York Giants team owner Steve Tisch is not committing to the 39-year-old for 2020. But even before he said that, there were already signs of an impending breakup. Daniel Jones is seen as the one to succeed the two-time Super Bowl MVP, a reason why he was picked up with the 6th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
"Everything's up in the air," Tisch said.
This may happen despite Manning showing signs of brilliance last NFL season, something that could at least place him under consideration as a backup. Nothing is definite, although the Giants may likely want a younger backup to Jones moving forward.
Also, the fate of Manning may depend on the direction that Joe Judge has planned. Tisch is throwing his full support on his new head coach who replaced Pat Shurmur after a forgettable 2019-20 season. The rebuilding Giants take another step in the 2020 NFL Draft where they will be selecting fourth overall.
The fate of Manning could also hinge on who the Giants will select in the coming NFL Draft. Aside from that, there is the dreaded decision to retire for the former top pick of the 2004 NFL Draft. Manning has played a total of 236 games, starting in 234 of them, according to Empire Sports Media. He already has two Super Bowl rings and MVP trophies to show. With a record of 117-117, it would be fitting to see the four-time Pro Bowler call it an NFL career on a high note.
Though he may have low chances of returning, expect Manning to keep his playing options open. With most teams preferring to go with a young quarterback, the odds of him returning are dimming. Then again, there is the case of Tom Brady who is older than him. But of course, they have two different tales but hoping for another NFL run won't hurt.
