The Carolina Panthers are sorely missing the services of Cam Newton who is recovering from a foot injury. They are coming off a humiliating loss to the surging San Francisco 49ers with Kyle Allen at the helm. Prior to that game, the 23-year-old quarterback never lost an NFL game. But there is always a first time for everything.

Allen felt the brunt of the vaunted 49ers defense. He was sacked seven times, six coming in the first half alone. Apparently, San Francisco was ready for him and the game plan obviously showed.

“There were definitely a couple of sacks that were completely on me. Just get the ball out of my hand or get it to the check down,” said Allen via Panthers.com. It was a learning experience for the young quarterback as well as the whole team.

Getting trashed 51-13, it came to no surprise that head coach Ron Rivera was in no mood for questions. Worse, he was thrown a Cam Newton question which seemed to irritate him a bit. It is a lingering question asked and the 57-year-old answered in the simplest way he could, The Athletic reported.

“Cam is still rehabbing,” Rivera said. “I’ll tell you guys where he is [status-wise] on Monday. I’ll tell you where he is on Wednesday. You don’t need to ask after that, to be honest with you.”

The question here is would the Panthers perform any better with Newton in uniform against the 49ers. There is no denying that San Francisco is streaking and the investment on head coach Kyle Shanahan is paying off. Hence, Newton may have not made much of a difference.

Obviously, the Panthers want Newton back but at 100-percent. The best news on the former NFL MVP is that he feels "good". Newton did travel with the team but was left home to continue rehabbing his foot. No timetable has been set.

However, it does not take a genius to figure out that the 30-year-old is pretty far from making a return. The fact that he has not practiced with the team yet speaks a lot. Hence, Allen will have to continue quarterbacking for now.

The Panthers will be facing the Tennessee Titans on Nov. 3 at 1:00 p.m. EST. Tennessee is favored to win over Carolina this weekend, meaning more bad news for Rivera, Allen and company.
