KEY POINTS

  • Brissett could replace Brady in New England
  • Brissett demoted with Philip Rivers signing
  • Pats need to pull a trade to get Brissett from Colts

The New England Patriots find themselves in search of a new quarterback with Tom Brady moving out and joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Several names have been mentioned, including the recently displaced Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers. But one name that could make sense is a former Patriot in Jacoby Brissett.

Brissett is currently with the Indianapolis Colts but the 27-year-old and was the team's starting quarterback last season. Part of this was because of the untimely retirement of Andrew Luck. He started well for the Colts but his efforts were just not enough. But the thing there is the former Super Bowl champion found limited people to work with as most fell to injuries.

Brissett threw 2,942 yards, 18 touchdowns, and six interceptions last NFL season as the Colts finished with a 7-9 record. As most know by now, Indianapolis signed Philip Rivers recently with the belief that he will assume starting quarterbacking duties. Brissett could slide down to the backup role anew unless a trade is initiated.

Brissett was selected by the New England Patriots in the third round. He was the 91st overall pick and had the time to show the Pats what he could do. With Jimmy Garoppolo suffering a shoulder injury and Brady serving out his infamous Deflategate suspension, the 27-year-old made a good account of himself pinch-hitting. He was eventually displaced when Brady was eligible to return. New England traded him to Indianapolis in September 2017 because the Colts were in dire need of a QB with Luck suffering an injury.

According to Sal Capaccio, there is a growing belief that the Pats could recall their former player. He has shown potential and could be a key player to watch if New England surrounds him with the proper talent. But for Brissett to return, a trade needs to be done between the two teams once more. Brissett is in the final year of a $30 million extension he signed with the Colts last season. He becomes a free agent in 2021.

Aside from Brissett and Newton, other QBs who the Pats could consider include Andy Dalton and Jameis Winston, NFL.com reported. For now, everything has been quiet although talks are likely being made over in New England to address their quarterbacking needs.
