NFL Rumors: Seahawks, Titans Interested In Jadeveon Clowney, Free Agent Changes Asking Price
NFL free agency 2020 is officially two weeks old, and a defensive end is the best player available. With the likes of Tom Brady, Amari Cooper and Byron Jones off the market, Jadeveon Clowney stands out as the top unsigned free agent.
Clowney has been trying to become one of the highest-paid players at his position. It’s resulted in him still looking for a team and having to drop his asking price.
According to ESPN’s Dianna Russini, Clowney is now seeking a deal that would pay him in the neighborhood of $17-$18 million per season. The 27-year-old had previously been asking for at least $20 million a year.
The Houston Texans traded Clowney to the Seattle Seahawks just prior to the start of the 2019 season. Seattle remains in the mix to sign Clowney. The Tennessee Titans reportedly also have interest in the former No.1 overall pick.
Clowney was taken by Houston atop the 2014 NFL Draft. After making just 11 starts in his first two seasons, Clowney totaled 24.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and 158 tackles from 2016-2018. Clowney made the Pro Bowl in all three of those seasons.
In his one season with Seattle, that Pro Bowl streak came to an end. Injuries limited Clowney to 3.0 sacks and 31 tackles in 13 games. Clowney added two fumble recoveries and an interception, which he returned for a touchdown.
DeMarcus Lawrence leads all defensive ends with an average yearly salary of $21 million, per Spotrac. The Dallas Cowboys’ star also ranks first at the position with a $105 million contract.
Frank Clark is the only other defensive end that makes at least $20 million a season. He signed a five-year, $104 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs a year ago.
Trey Flowers is third among all defensive ends with an average yearly salary of $18 million per season. Yannick Ngakoue, Cameron Jordan, Leonard Williams and Arik Armstead all make between $17 million and $18 million a year.
