KEY POINTS

  • Jimmy Garoppolo’s shoulder surgery may force NFL teams to pass on two-time Super Bowl champion
  • The Niners may opt to cut Garoppolo to free up salary space by Week One
  • The Panthers and the Seahawks are the only remaining NFL teams in need of a regular quarterback

Jimmy Garoppolo’s future remains unclear, although he remains officially part of the San Francisco 49ers.

The growing belief is that the two-time Super Bowl champion is likely moving to a new NFL team, but there are reportedly concerns about his health among teams after the 30-year-old quarterback underwent surgery on March 8 to repair the labrum in his throwing shoulder.

An unnamed league source told Pro Football Talk that it is unlikely for any team to be willing to trade for a quarterback with a $25 million compensation package after he underwent surgery.

The Niners were also not consulted by Garoppolo about undergoing surgery, which possibly made "every team that otherwise would be interested in Garoppolo very leery," the report said.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler also reported that teams he has talked to have "legitimate concern" about Garoppolo's "shoulder surgery and what that might mean for his offseason and the 2022 campaign." International Business Times could not independently verify this information.

If no NFL team is willing to trade for the 2013 Walton Payton Award winner, the 49ers may be left in a spot and be forced to resort to drastic measures to get some cap relief.

None of Garoppolo’s salary becomes guaranteed until the eve of Week One. It has now turned into a waiting game for San Francisco, which is hoping to get some cap relief.

One option for the 49ers is to cut Garoppolo. The 30-year-old is in the last year of his current contract so cutting him would mean leaving behind only $1.4 million in dead money. It would also give the Niners more than $25 million in cap space.

There has been no official offer made to the Niners for Garoppolo as of this writing.

However, 49ers general manager John Lynch has been "telling interested teams" that they have an offer of two second-round draft picks for the veteran QB, according to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio.

"At least one interested team reacted to the news," Florio reported, citing unnamed sources.

But with most teams already signing new play-callers, teams that could try to deal for Garoppolo are slowly waning.

The Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks are two NFL teams that have yet to fill their quarterback void. The Houston Texans could use an upgrade but appear to be content with Davis Mills, for now, NBC Sports reported.
