NFL Trade News: Jets To Re-Acquire Veteran QB From Eagles To Fill Void
KEY POINTS
- The New York Jets will reunite with Joe Flacco to cover for a sidelined Zach Wilson
- Mike White will start for the Jets starting on Sunday against the Bengals
- Flacco's return is seen as a chance to mentor Wilson
The New York Jets will reunite with veteran quarterback Joe Flacco to address their quarterback problem.
According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the Eagles sent Flacco to the Jets in exchange for a conditional sixth-round draft pick.
Adam Schefter of ESPN, citing sources, added that this would depend on how much playing time Flacco gets with the Eagles.
The move will address the quarterback issues that the Jets are currently facing. With rookie Zach Wilson sidelined due to a PCL sprain, New York only has Mike White as the only legitimate quarterback on the roster.
Wilson is expected to be out between 2 to 4 weeks, NBC Sports reported.
Wilson sustained the injury in the second quarter of their game against the New England Patriots on Sunday, October 24.
He twisted his right knee on a hit by linebacker Matthew Judon. The 22-year-old never returned to the game after that.
White is reportedly set to start for the Eagles in their next assignment against the Cincinnati Bengals. Flacco will serve as insurance in case he falters, ESPN reported.
The return of Flacco to New York addresses more than a predicament for head coach Robert Saleh.
Being a former Super Bowl champion, the 36-year-old is also expected to guide Wilson moving forward.
Flacco also gets the chance to see more action with Wilson on the sidelines. In his previous stint, the Super Bowl XLVII MVP started in only five games.
Before that, he also had stints with the Baltimore Ravens (2008–2018) and the Denver Broncos (2019).
Flacco won the Super Bowl MVP in 2013 with the Ravens. He was also the NFL Rookie of the Year in 2008.
Aside from these feats, adding Flacco means Saleh will add a player who is familiar with the Jets’ system.
Although he played for just one season, most pundits believe the adjustment period will not be an issue.
In that lone season with the Jets, Flacco completed 55.2% of his throws for 864 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions, CBS Sports reported.
