With the 2019 NFL trade deadline just hours away, the top players on teams that are clearly not headed to the playoffs find themselves in the middle of trade rumors. That doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a chance those Pro Bowlers will be dealt by Tuesday afternoon.

ProFootballTalk has reported that the Arizona Cardinals have rejected significant trade offers for cornerback Patrick Peterson. According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, the Washington Redskins don’t seem interested in trading left tackle Trent Williams or linebacker Ryan Kerrigan.

Arizona is below .500 and firmly in the basement of the NFC West. Washington is headed for a top pick in the 2020 NFL Draft with just one victory at the midway point of the season.

The Cardinals did have a three-game winning streak before losing in New Orleans Sunday. Peterson is under contract for another year. He’s made the Pro Bowl in each of the last eight seasons, though that streak will likely conclude after he missed the first six games of 2019 with a suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

There were rumors last season that Peterson might be traded. Arizona held onto the star defensive player, even as they were headed for the NFL’s worst record.

The Cardinals actually made an addition Monday, acquiring Kenyan Drake from the Miami Dolphins for a conditional draft pick. According to ProFootballTalk, at least one trade offer for Peterson included a first-round pick.

Washington might be able to deal Williams for a first-round pick. Doing so would make sense since Williams has held out all season long and said he doesn’t plan to play for the Redskins again.

Even as he remains away from the team, Washington has decided to hold onto Williams. The veteran has made the last seven Pro Bowls.

Kerrigan is playing on the heels of three straight Pro Bowl selections. La Canfora has reported that teams don’t believe he’ll be moved, even though a few contenders are interested in acquiring him.

The Redskins are last in the NFC with a minus-96 point differential. Washington fired head coach Jay Gruden three weeks ago.
