Nick Carter's Jingle Ball Performance Removed From Live Stream Amid Rape Allegations
KEY POINTS
- Nick Carter and his bandmates performed at iHeartRadio's Jingle Ball on Friday
- The Backstreet Boys' performance was not featured in the CW's live stream of the event
- Carter currently faces a sexual battery lawsuit for an alleged 2001 rape incident
Nick Carter joined the other Backstreet Boys members at this year's Jingle Ball, but their performance was cut from the event's live stream.
On Friday, the embattled singer, 42, showed up with his bandmates Kevin Richardson, AJ McLean, Brian Littrell and Howie Dorough at the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in New York City despite the sexual assault allegations against him.
The group performed as part of the star-studded lineup at Madison Square Garden, which included Charlie Puth, Lizzo, Demi Lovato, Dua Lipa and many more stars.
However, Us Weekly reported that the Backstreet Boys' number was not featured in the CW's live stream of the event amid the controversy involving Carter. But it's worth noting that attendees of the show were welcoming when the group took the stage.
A day before the event, ABC also announced that it would no longer air the Backstreet Boys' holiday special, "A Very Backstreet Holiday," on Dec. 14 due to the lawsuit against Carter.
Variety confirmed that the group already filmed the special, which was supposed to feature their Christmas album songs and performances of their guest stars, Meghan Trainor, Seth Rogen, Rob Riggle, Nikki Glaser, Atsuko Okatsuka and Ron Funches.
On Thursday, a 39-year-old woman named Shannon "Shay" Ruth filed a sexual battery lawsuit, alleging Carter raped her and infected her with HPV when she was only 17.
The woman claimed the rape incident happened in February 2001 after the Backstreet Boys' concert in Tacoma, Washington. Ruth identified herself as autistic and living with cerebral palsy in the lawsuit.
Carter has since denied the allegations through his lawyer Michael Holtz.
"This claim about an incident that supposedly took place more than 20 years ago is not only legally meritless but also entirely untrue. Unfortunately, for several years now, Ms. Ruth has been manipulated into making false allegations about Nick – and those allegations have changed repeatedly and materially over time," Holtz said in a statement to Variety.
"No one should be fooled by a press stunt orchestrated by an opportunistic lawyer – there is nothing to this claim whatsoever, which we have no doubt the courts will quickly realize," the artist's lawyer added.
