Nick Foles Salary: Chicago Bears QB Proving $24M Gamble Is Worth It
KEY POINTS
- Nick Foles won the Super Bowl MVP in 2017
- He signed a 4-year, $88 million deal to play for the Jacksonville Jaguars
- The Jaguars deal flopped, so they traded him to the Chicago Bears
Nick Foles was traded to the Chicago Bears for a 3-year, $24 million deal. Critics claim he is not worth that money, but he is starting to prove he deserves it.
Fans were quick to forget that Foles was named the MVP at Super Bowl LII after the Philadelphia Eagles stunned the New England Patriots led by Tom Brady. The fact that he came in as a backup for the then injured starting quarterback Carson Wentz and completed the Cinderella playoff run of the Eagles by capturing the title made the accomplishment even more impressive. In an inexplicable move, the Eagles traded their title winning QB to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019.
The Jaguars scooped him up in a mega deal. However, the 4-year, $88 million deal with Jacksonville flopped, resulting in a dismal 0-4 win-loss record, per CBS Sports. His injuries played a factor in the dismal performance, but the Jaguars were ready to move on and found a trade destination in Bears. The contract details, however, needed to be restructured for Chicago to accommodate Foles.
According to Sportrac, the Austin, Texas native signed a 3-year, $24 million deal to play for the Bears. The contract is loaded with incentives with $4 million signing bonus and $21 million guaranteed. It also includes a $750,000 cash prize for a Pro Bowl, NFL MVP or Super Bowl MVP citation.
The move is also a big risk for the Bears who expressed desire to win now. They want a healthy and rejuvenated version of Foles who still has a lot in his tank. If the comeback win against the Atlanta Falcons were any indication, the gamble on the QB might be worth it. Against the Falcons, the Bears found themselves in a 26-10 hole before Foles took over, a report from NBC Chicago revealed. The Bears went on to defeat Atlanta, 30-26, and snatched its third win in as many games this season.
It’s still early and the wins were not only due to Foles but the comeback was engineered by the former Super Bowl MVP. If all goes well, the trade is a win-win for the Jaguars and the Bears. For Foles, it all boils down to being a professional and accepting the business side of things even though he had envisioned himself settling in Jacksonville for a long time.
“We went to Jacksonville with a lot of hopes. I will say this: I don’t have any regrets. We gave it every single thing we had the entire year,” he said in an interview published by the Chicago Tribune.
