Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been summoned to appear in court for allegedly assaulting his former girlfriend late last year, according to Australian news reports.
The news broke as the 27-year-old was preparing to play Christian Garin in a Wimbledon quarter-final on Wednesday. The tennis ace went on to win the match to advance to the semifinals. Who exactly is Kyrgios and what is his net worth?
Kyrgios’ professional career started in 2013 when he was just 18. He had a breakthrough match at Wimbledon the following year when he defeated Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal, who was then ranked number one in the world.
Kyrgios’ victory against Nadal marked the first time since 1992 that a male player who was ranked outside of the top 100 beat a world number one. Kyrgios was ranked 144th at the time.
Today, Kyrgios is ranked 40th in the official Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour men’s world rankings.
His highest ever ranking is 13, which he achieved back in 2016.
Throughout his nearly a decade career, Kyrgios has won six ATP titles and has reached nine ATP finals, including a Masters 1000 final at the 2017 Cincinnati Masters.
Kyrgios’ net worth stands at $8 million to date, as per Celebrity Net Worth.
Despite not playing so much during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, his overall earnings reportedly soared due to his ventures off the court.
His endorsement deals reportedly increased after he signed with top U.S. agent Stuart Duguid back in July 2020, according to Daily Mail.
After signing with Duguid, Kyrgios signed deals with companies including PlayStation, Kia and Mexican food giant Old El Paso.
Duguid, who also handles four-time women's Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka, is estimated to have helped bring in between $8million and $10million in off-the-court earnings annually for the player.
Sports marketing consultant Professor Sarah Kelly told Daily Mail that Kyrgios' endorsement earning could be anywhere from $1million to $10million and this will further increase if he wins a Grand Slam.
Kyrgios is accused of assault and is alleged to have grabbed his former partner Chiara Passari last year, according to The Canberra Times.
"ACT Policing can confirm a 27-year-old Watson man is scheduled to face the ACT Magistrates Court on the 2nd of August in relation to one charge of common assault following an incident in December 2021," police said.
The charge carries a maximum jail sentence of two years.
