The most successful head coach in college football is back to being the sport's highest-paid coach. Alabama has agreed to give Nick Saban a new contract that includes a historic average salary.

Saban's contract is worth $93.6 million over eight years, running through the 2029 college football season, according to The Athletic. Alabama's head coach is set to make an average of $11.7 million per season, surpassing Georgia head coach Kirby Smart's average salary of $11.25 million.

Saban's salary for the 2022 season will be $10.7 million. The 70-year-old is set to earn a $12.9 million salary in 2029, the final year of the contract.

This upcoming season will mark Saban's 16th year as Alabama's head coach. Over the last decade and a half, Saban has led the Crimson Tide to six national championships. Alabama has been the runner-up for the national title three times since hiring Saban.

Smart and Georgia defeated Saban and Alabama in last season's national championship game. With Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young returning as the starting quarterback, Alabama is the country's No. 1 ranked team and favored to win this year's national title.

Since the College Football Playoff's inception in 2015, Alabama has only failed to make the CFP once. Saban has a 178-25 record as the Crimson Tide head coach, suffering more than two losses in just two seasons.

Saban will be 78 years old when his contract with Alabama expires.
