“Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev is reportedly not doing too well after her split from co-star Ian Somheralder. Despite reports that the two have “remained friends,” insiders are now claiming that the actress is struggling.

According to Us Weekly, the Dobrev-Somerhalder reunion at the CW Upfronts in New York City on May 16 was anything but joyous. “Her eyes welled up,” a source told the magazine. “She looked so sad.”

It was described as an “awkward” reunion, and they reportedly avoided eye contact, but by the end of the evening they were said to have had a “heart-to-heart.” The new reports of the uncomfortable reunion come a few weeks after another eyewitness told Life & Style magazine that the pair “kept it professional and seemed to put everything aside to show up and work.”

While the former couple posed separately for the cameras, they did appear on stage together at the event – on opposite sides of the CW president. Fortunately Dobrev and Somerhalder still have some time to spend apart before they have to return to Atlanta to begin work on season five of “The Vampire Diaries.”

Both the stars have kept busy since they ended their three-year relationship in early May. Somerhalder has been hopping all over Europe, and is currently working on an undisclosed new movie. Dobrev on the other hand has taken a break from work, and last week attended a friend’s wedding in New York City.

Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder’s reps never made a statement on their breakup, but sources told Life & Style that their split arose from commitment issues. “He was starting to talk marriage and she is just getting started on her career,” explained the insider. “She loves him, and they still talk every day, but she is not ready to make that huge commitment yet. Maybe in 10 years.”
