Nina Dobrev Wishes Ex-Boyfriend Ian Somerhalder A Happy Birthday, Calls 'Vampire Diaries' Co-Star 'Smouldy' [PHOTO]
“Vampire Diaries” fans were devastated when co-stars Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder ended their three-year relationship in May, but a recent tweet from Dobrev reveals that the pair are definitely still close friends!
Despite rumored new flings and busy schedules, Dobrev took the time to tweet her ex-boyfriend a sweet birthday message on Monday:
“Happy Bday Smouldy! Hope you had a beautiful day filled w/ smiles+gluten free cake! But not too much cake, we’re on the CW :P @IanSomerhadler.”
The cute “Smouldy” nickname immediately threw Twitter users into a frenzy, but unfortunately it doesn’t appear to hint at a romantic reconnection. Dobrev has a history of calling her now on-screen (but not off-screen) lover “Smouldy” because she used the name in another tweet post-break up in early September.
Somerhalder had tweeted a photo of his co-star on the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine, posting: “In a store this morning –who do I see? The one and only @NinaDorev. These things are almost gone …” Nina Dobrev responded: “Thank you Smouldy :)))”
Somerhalder, who turned 35 on Sunday, has yet to reply to his former lover’s birthday post, but he did tease “Vampire Diaries” viewers about how he spent his special day … with puppies!
“I can’t thank you enough today for my birthday love,” he tweeted along with a photo. “Pls RETWEET! Donate! Help us change the world isfoundation.org.”
The photo features the star holding one of the gorgeous puppies that his rescued dog Nietzsche gave birth to in early October. Dobrev was also on hand at the time to watch Nietzsche become a mother and Somerhalder become a “grandfather.”
While Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder may not be heating up off-screen, fans of the former couple can still watch them get steamy on “The Vampire Diaries” as Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore … but potentially not for long. Delena’s relationship has become strained over the past couple of episodes as the pair work on problems stemming from college, Stefan and Bonnie. Episode nine, “The Cell,” seemed to drive the duo further apart when Elena discovered that Damon’s been harboring a nasty plan of revenge since the late 1950s. Will Elena be able to look past Damon’s horrific acts on innocent people? Or will the mid-season finale, episode 10, push Delena to break up? “Vampire Diaries” fans can watch Dobrev and Somerhalder in “Fifty Shades of Grayson” on the CW on Thursday at 8 p.m.
