A North Carolina’s sheriff’s office stated a firearms instructor was injured in an accidental shooting while he was on the job.

The Wake County Sheriff’s office gave a statement to local media outlets saying the instructor had accidentally shot his leg at the Wake County Firearms Education and Training Center on Sunday afternoon.

Deputies claimed they responded to the shooting range about 20 miles southwest of Raleigh on a call saying the instructor had shot himself while re-holstering his weapon.

Investigators claimed the instructor was taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered as life-threatening. The name of the instructor has not yet been released at this time.

A government site claimed the county built the center for the citizens, law enforcement officers and hunters that want to practice target shooting safely.

It is not the first time an accidental shooting has happened in a shooting range or involving an instructor. One of the most tragic stories was when a nine-year-old girl killed her shooting instructor while she was being shown how to use a high powered submachine gun in 2016.

The instructor was giving a lesson at a shooting range in Arizona when the recoil from the automatic weapon caused her to lose control. The muzzle turned to the instructor.

Charles Vacca, 39, died was shot in the head and died after being airlifted to hospital. The girl was at the shooting range in the company of her parents, who were filming the session.

The footage showed the instructor coaching her as she fired a single shot then proceeded to fire on fully automatic mode, which then shifted the gun and shot the instructor.

In another case, in early August, a Californian man who was going to a firearms training class for his concealed weapons permit was accidentally shot by the trainer.

The victim was only identified as a civilian and was participating in the course at the Ben Clark Training Center.

During the inspection, a civilian instructor who was not immediately identified by the department did a trigger test for the gun and shot the student in the leg.

The student had not unloaded his gun, which was a requirement before the next phase. The man was not seriously injured, but it was a lesson.

Gun safety is a sensitive topic at present on the heels of mass shootings occurring in the country, so incidents are treated with much scrutiny.
