UPDATE- 12.30 a.m. EDT, March 27: The victim was identified as Monika Diamond, a 34-year-old Black transgender woman. Diamond was the owner of an event promotion company and active in the Charlotte LGBTQ.

A man was shot dead while being treated in an ambulance by paramedics. The incident took place in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday morning.

Officials arrived at Days Inn/Azteca Mexican Restaurant parking lot after receiving a disturbance report. Upon arrival, the officers saw five to six people in a parking lot. Suddenly one of them reported having shortness of breath following which medics were called to the scene.

In a press release, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said, “Medic was also dispatched to the scene to treat one of the individuals involved in the disturbance.”

Police said that when the victim, identified as 34-year-old Jeremy Whitted, was being treated inside the ambulance, he requested a friend to assist him. However, when the medic denied entry to 32-year-old Prentice Bess, he left the scene and came back with a gun. He then shot the victim “several times.”

“While medic personnel were treating the victim in their ambulance, the suspect shot the victim. Officers were able to immediately take the suspect into custody,” the press release stated.

Calling it a "very volatile situation,” police said that no officials or paramedics were injured in the incident. Meanwhile, Bess was charged with murder and remained in jail.
