'The Notebook' Coming to Broadway, says Nicholas Sparks
The Notebook is Broadway bound, according to its author Nicholas Sparks.
The 45-year-old confirmed the news on CBS Wednesday morning, during a promotional interview for his latest romance novel, The Best of Me.
It's interesting, to be very frank. We're still . . . in development of this process . . . 'The Notebook' is going to be some sort of musical, Sparks said on the show.
While Sparks remained mum on more details -- such as writers, directors, composers and of course, the cast -- he did share his two cents on the process of transitioning from screen to stage.
The best way that I've always found, and it's what I've done in Hollywood or whether it's working with the publishers that I've worked with for a long time is to work with people that you really trust who understand what it's about and they want to take that and mold it into something new, he said.
The Notebook, adapted from Sparks' first novel of the same name, starred Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, who played the lead roles of Noah and Allie. The film, released in 2004, went on to gross more than $115 million at the box office and made Gosling and McAdams household names.
Over the years, it's become somewhat customary for a Sparks' novel to be adapted into film form. The first was 1999's Message in a Bottle, starring Kevin Costner and Robin Wright Penn. A Walk to Remember, Night's in Rodanthe, Dear John and The Last Song have followed, raking in millions for studios like Warner Bros. and Screen Gems.
The latest Sparks film adaptation is The Lucky One, with Zac Efron playing the lead role of a Marine who searches for a woman he believes was his good luck charm during his time in Iraq. The film opens in April.
So when will The Notebook musical arrive on Broadway?
Not anytime soon, according to Sparks, who also revealed to CBS that film rights for The Best of Me were recently purchased by Warner Bros. over the summer. But even before that, Sparks and company will be working on the film adaptation for his 16th novel, Safe Haven, set for a theatrical release in mid-2012.
The Notebook musical will be the first musical for Sparks.
