KEY POINTS

  • The US Open is expected to push through from August 31 to September 13
  • World number one player Novak Djokovic is favored to win the tournament
  • Daniil Medvedev serves as Djokovic’s biggest threat in the Grand Slam

This year’s US Open will be a test for today’s top star Novak Djokovic as Daniil Medvedev is considered to be a legitimate contender for the title. While Djokovic is considered as the best player in the draw, there are several aspects in Mevedev’s game to take into account in the upcoming tournament.

There’s no question that the man who is ranked number one in the world is considered by most as the favorite to win the title. The Serbian superstar remains undefeated in 2020 and is coming off a championship win at the Western & Southern Open. This major will also not include his rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the brackets. Without the other two members of Tennis’ big three, Djokovic is expected to cruise through the matches and claim his 18th Grand Slam.

Despite the favorable environment, there will still be challenges for Djokovic that he shouldn’t underestimate. One of these is the rising star Daniil Medvedev, as he took Nadal to a five-set thriller in last year’s US Open Final.

“Medvedev has the most balanced game in the business from his offensive and defensive skill sets. His nickname, ‘The Octopus,’ is based on his ability to defend with his length,” former American tennis player Luke Jensen said by way of ESPN.

The current world number five player is known to have a unique style of play that many see as unorthodox. The way Medvedev moves on the tennis court flows at a different pace that gives him an advantage over anyone. While he’s not overwhelmingly powerful, his agility and consistency give him more coverage whenever he’s playing.

“I feel Medvedev is more like the giant squid that is considered that most lethal predator in the water based on extreme brain power and overwhelming firepower. BOOK IT! Medvedev wins US Open 2020,” Jensen wrote.

This will pose a threat to Djokovic despite being in control of most of his matches this year. The 33-year-old veteran has seen almost everything on the court, but it’s important to note that Medvedev serves as a worthy challenger for the title.

Retired Australian player Rennae Stubbs further emphasizes the thought of Medvedev running for the Grand Slam.

“Medvedev. After last year I think he can go one further,” Stubbs said.

It will be interesting to see how the US Open will play out amidst the unique situation of the global pandemic. The tournament will be played on closed doors and will run from August 31 to September 13.
