Three individuals currently dominate the modern era of tennis: Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The big three as they are fondly called have racked up Grand Slam after Grand Slam and are not looking to stop anytime soon. Federer is currently on top with a record-breaking 20 Majors under his belt. Nadal is inches away with 19, while Djokovic recently picked up his 17th in the 2020 Australian Open.
Federer announced that he would miss a good chunk of the year with his knee surgery rehabilitation. This opens up the opportunity for Nadal and Djokovic to dominate the upcoming tournaments and Majors – with the French Open as the nearest Grand Slam.
But before the clay court season commences, several tournaments across the world have also taken place. The 2020 Dubai Duty Free Tournament recently concluded with Djokovic taking a convincing straight-set win against up and coming star Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Serbian tennis star cruised through in two sets, 6-3, 6-4. This marks another win for the World Number 1 and continues to dominate 2020.
He hasn’t lost a match this year and remains undefeated. His last defeat came from the hands of Federer in their ATP World Tour Finals in November. He lost 6-4, 6-3 against the Swiss legend during that match but has not lost ever since. He has cruised through the Davis Cup, ATP Cup, Australian Open and most recently the tournament in Dubai. This marked his fifth Dubai Championships trophy.
When asked on how he’s performing, per Express UK, Djokovic said that he’s been trying to embrace and appreciate the moment he’s in. “ I think this has been one of the best starts of all seasons I had in my career,” he said.
He continued by saying that he’s feeling great on the court and he’s been playing his best tennis on the hard courts. “That is my most successful and preferred surface,” he added.
The eight-time Australian Open Champion is hoping to bring enough momentum to win the next Grand Slam. His current rival now would be Nadal, who most recently also won a tournament on his own. Nadal won the Mexican Open in straight sets against Taylor Fritz, 6-3, 6-2. It will be an interesting predicament to see both top stars battle it out in the succeeding Majors to come.
