Novak Djokovic recently won the 2020 Australian Open care of a thrilling five-set finish. He beat world number 5 Dominic Thiem 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. This win marks a successful Australian Open title defense for the Serbian making him an 8-time winner of the tournament.
Novak Djokovic is guaranteed to return to World Number 1 after this feat. After the match, he acknowledged the hard work Dominic Thiem put up. “You were very close to win it, you definitely have a lot more time in your career and I’m sure that you will get one of the Grand Slam trophies and more, more than one,” said Djokovic.
This is his 17th Grand Slam overall in his career, putting him closer to rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
This victory for Novak Djokovic also continues the legendary win streak the big three of tennis has put up. In the past 13 Grand Slams, all of the winners were part of the trio of Novak Djokovic, Rafel Nadal and Roger Federer.
The last time someone was able to succeed in a Grand Slam outside of those three was back when Stan Wawrinka won the 2016 US Open. Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray are the only active players other than the trio to have multiple Grand Slams.
Other than that, it’s been pure dominance for the biggest names in tennis. Roger Federer is seeking to extend his record-holding 20 Grand Slam victories. Rafael Nadal is trailing behind him with 19. The Spaniard is still the biggest name when it comes to the clay season and is favored to win the next Grand Slam in the French Open. Novak, on the other hand, is still defending Wimbledon this year and is seeking a three-peat.
Although the three continue to pile up the trophies, this doesn’t mean that there is a lack of talent. There are players continuing their rise to the top with young stars stepping up to the court. Dominic Thiem is one of them having been to three Grand Slam finals already. But in the meantime, the tennis world will have to wait as the three are still continuing to improve and work on their game.
