New York -- A cab in New York City struck a cyclist, jumped the curb, and rammed into pedestrians in central Manhattan as the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Six people, including the 60-year-old cab driver, were hospitalized and three of them were in critical condition.

The incident took place around 1 p.m. Monday at a busy intersection in Midtown Manhattan, CBS News reported. The driver of the yellow SUV cab was taking a left turn when he collided with the cyclist, NYPD's Deputy Chief John Chell of the Patrol Services Bureau said.

Police believe the driver may have panicked and then accidentally pressed the gas instead of the break, ABC7NY reported

The driver veered towards the side, jumped the curb, and plowed into a group of pedestrians seated outside a bagel shop on the sidewalk. The taxi driver struck two women, who were “pressed against the wall” of a building, Chell added.

"As this occurs, a remarkable scene took place. About 15 to 20 New Yorkers attempted to pick this cab off these women," said Chell.

Adam Seitzman, 31, saw the aftermath of the crash from the seventh floor of a building nearby.

“Everyone scattered but then about 15 seconds later... everyone ran back realizing that people were pinned,” Seitzman told New York Daily News. “That guy who was in the taxi said that when they were turning left, that he was like, ‘Is he going to stop? Is he going to stop? Is he going to stop?’ And then they hit the bicyclist.”

Mamadou Barry, 40, said he was among the group of people who tried to lift the cab off the women that were pinned against the wall.

“(The driver) turned real fast and there were people sitting there and he hit them too and then the wall stopped the car,” Barry told the outlet. “It just happened real fast. He hit (the bicyclist) and we were screaming, ‘What the hell is going on?’”

Barry claimed the pedestrians managed to get the cab off at least one of the trapped women.

Six people, including the cab driver, were taken to the hospital with injuries. Two of the victims sustained serious leg injuries while one victim’s leg was completely severed.

Mayor Eric Adams toured the scene of the crash Monday night and said his administration would take steps to prevent such a crash from occurring again.

“We just want to make sure that we’re there for them at this time,” said Adams. “It’s one of those tragic events that can happen with vehicles, pedestrians and bikes all come together at the same time.”

He also praised the pedestrians who rushed to help the victims at the scene. “Watching those New Yorkers that responded the way they did, it just shows how compassionate we are as a city,” Adams added.

The crash remains under investigation.
